Women In Transition is seeking a passionate, collaborative, and community-centered Community Educator to lead innovative violence prevention initiatives focused on the intersection of domestic violence and gun violence.

Community Educator, Gun Violence Prevention

Scope of Position

The Community Educator at Women In Transition (WIT) plays a key role in advancing domestic violence (DV) prevention through education, outreach, and community partnership building. With a focus on the intersection of domestic violence and gun violence, this position fosters community awareness and supports norms change by building relationships with Community Violence Intervention (CVI) programs and other community-based organizations throughout Philadelphia. Through training, technical assistance, collaboration, and capacity-building efforts, the Community Educator equips frontline staff, partner organizations, and community members with the knowledge and tools to recognize signs of domestic violence, respond effectively, and connect individuals to appropriate resources and support. By strengthening the ability of community-based organizations to identify and address domestic violence within their existing work, this position helps build a more coordinated community response to domestic violence and firearm-related harm.

This is a full-time 35 hour per week position, hybrid position reporting to WIT’s Prevention and Education Director.

Workshop Facilitation

  • Community Based Education: Create, plan, and facilitate interactive workshops, presentations, and training to help the community recognize and respond to intimate partner violence using a trauma-informed and equity based lens. Examples of community education topics include DV awareness, safety planning, firearm-related lethality risk, and available community resources. Additional trainings include: Bystander Intervention, Healthy Relationships, Boundaries, and Supporting Survivors.

  • Systems Based Education: Plan and facilitate professional development training and continuing education opportunities that provide skill building and best practices for addressing domestic violence and supporting survivors. Examples of trainings includes IPV& Substance Use, IPV & Healthcare, and IPV & The Workplace.

  • Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD): Plan and Facilitate WAVE ESD programming. Teach skills and strategies that participants can use in a range of situations from verbal harassment to physical assault.

Community Outreach and Collaboration

  • Foster connections between domestic violence service providers and community violence intervention organizations serving overlapping populations.

  • Build and maintain relationships with community violence intervention organizations and violence prevention stakeholders throughout Philadelphia

  • Stay informed about Philadelphia gun related domestic violence incidences

  • Attend vigils for DV shooting victims to support community members and increase connection to DV resources and support

  • Conduct targeted outreach initiatives to engage key stakeholders and community partners.

  • Build and maintain partnerships with local agencies, coalitions, and community groups working on domestic violence prevention and gun violence. Attend community meetings and events.

  • Participate in collaborative efforts and events to address systemic barriers to ending domestic violence.

  • Collaborate with community organizations, schools, colleges, workplaces, and other stakeholders to promote awareness and coordinate outreach efforts i.e. (tabling, community conversations, etc.)

  • Represent WIT at community meetings, coalition gatherings, conferences, and public events.

Curriculum and Program Development:

Collaborate with community partners to develop culturally responsive and accessible messaging that resonates with local communities.

  • Help integrate domestic violence prevention strategies into existing violence prevention frameworks.

  • Identify emerging community needs and recommend program improvements.

  • Assist Director in the development and implementation of strategic goals for Prevention and Education

  • Collaborate to develop engaging and informative activities, curriculum and resources for domestic violence prevention education programs, ensuring content is evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and age-appropriate

Training Coordination

  • Provide follow up for logistics and scheduling needed to deliver training and presentations

Evaluation and Reporting

  • Collect and input data for education and prevention programs

Telephone Counseling:

  • Provide up to four hours of LifeLine coverage weekly for supportive telephone counseling for survivors of domestic violence as well as family members, friends, and third-party professionals who are concerned about someone in their lives who may be experiencing abuse.

*** The Community Educator will be required to complete JARS (Justice Autonomy Restoration Safety) 45-hour advocacy training. This 45-hour training provides an in-depth understanding of the nuances and dynamics of domestic violence/intimate partner violence. Advocates must be trained for a minimum of 45 hours before an advocate is extended the privilege of confidential communication with clients.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field is a plus. Experience may substitute for an academic degree.

  • Demonstrated experience in community outreach.

  • Experience in delivering educational programs and workshops.

  • Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics, trauma-informed approaches, and intersectionality.

  • Strong communication, facilitation, and public speaking skills.

  • Ability to engage diverse audiences and create inclusive learning environments.

  • Commitment to social justice, equity, and empowerment of survivors.

  • Comfort traveling and working directly at the community level.

  • Evening and weekends as needed for workshops, events, and outreach activities.

  • Familiarity with Philadelphia is a plus.

  • Bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. as needed.

  • Ability to provide FBI/Child Abuse/Criminal clearances.

Pay: $43,000.00 - $47,000.00 per year
